Consumer Data Right goes live for energy sector

Australian consumers deserve to have their data working for them, securely and safely.

That’s why the Albanese Government is continuing to roll out the Consumer Data Right to help families take control over household bills, protected by the best available security and privacy protocols.

From this week, CDR goes live from the energy market, giving consumers a way to shop around for a better deal on their power bills.

CDR gives consumers secure access to their detailed consumption and billing data and share it, with their consent, with accredited businesses.

They can then use that data to compare their individual circumstances to market offers and determine which deal is the best for them.

Over time, the government expects industry to respond with better‑tailored plans and more meaningful engagement with CDR‑enabled customers.

Today’s energy market rollout follows the safe and successful introduction of CDR into the Open Banking environment, giving consumers power over their bank data.

Australia is the first jurisdiction in the world to roll out CDR across multiple sectors.

The government is consulting with other sectors to further expand CDR in due course.
