Government consults to improve black economy offences and enforcement

Note

The Morrison Government is determined to help honest Australians and their businesses by disrupting the black economy and its unfair advantages.

The consultation paper released today is another step towards implementing the Government’s response to the recommendations of the Black Economy Taskforce final report, as announced part of the 2018-19 Budget.

The black economy is a constantly changing landscape and it is important to deter people from engaging in this type of behaviour. We are seeking views on ways to protect the community and combat the black economy to create a fairer playing field for all Australians.

The Black Economy Taskforce recommended implementing a more targeted, stronger and more visible enforcement strategy to reduce black economy behaviours, with the key focus on more effective prosecution processes and tailored black economy offences.

The Government welcomes feedback on the issues explored in the consultation paper. The consultation paper is available on the Treasury website and submissions close on 21 December 2018.
