More young Australians will have a career in engineering thanks to a $37 million learning hub to be built by the Gillard Government at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC).
The Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Wayne Swan, attended USC's Sippy Down campus to mark their successful bid for $30 million from the Gillard Government's Education Investment Fund.
The Engineering Learning Hub will enhance the pathway to engineering degree courses from TAFE and schools, which will address skills needs in the region as well as at a national level.
The project includes Advanced Visualisation Theatres combining 3D and virtual reality simulation technology at both the USC and the University of Southern Queensland.
It will also develop new spaces for students, staff, industry and the community to meet, engage and collaborate.
Mr Swan spoke about the critical importance of education investment to ensure that Australia thrives in the Asian Century.
"At the very heart of the Gillard Government's vision for Australia is investing deeply in education in every corner of our country," Mr Swan said.
"I'm thrilled at what this facility will mean for the Sunshine Coast, somewhere with a very special place in my heart.
"By delivering first-class education facilities we will help generate jobs and future prosperity for the Sunshine Coast region, and the country."
Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, said the Education Investment Fund was developing new state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities across the country to ensure regional students have better quality education opportunities.
"The Gillard Government believes your postcode should not be a barrier to university," Senator Evans said.
"We are opening up the doors to university, improving campuses and facilities and boosting student support."
Senator for Queensland, Claire Moore, said the Engineering Learning Hub project will give Queenslanders access to better quality education and training opportunities and world-class facilities.
"The project will help increase the number of engineering students in the region by working with TAFE and high schools, giving more students access to rewarding engineering jobs in the future," Senator Moore said.
"This is not just a great result for the University, but also for the entire region."

It is expected that further successful projects will be announced in the coming months.
