The Hon Clare O’Neil MP was sworn in to the role of Minister for Housing, Minister for Homelessness, Minister for Cities on 13 May 2025.
Prior to this, from 29 July 2024 to 13 May 2025, she served as Minister for Housing and Minister for Homelessness.
First deal struck to deliver 100,000 new homes for first home buyers
The Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments have struck a deal to unlock 17,000 new homes for South Australians, including nearly 7,000 for first home buyers.
Both Labor Governments are determined to build more homes and help first home buyers achieve their dream of owning a home.
New home starts hit highest level in three-and-a-half years
New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows dwelling commencements continue to rise, with total commencements up 11.6 per cent on this time last year and their highest level in three and a half years.
A total of 48,778 dwellings commenced over the quarter, the strongest quarterly result since March 2022.
Building approvals hit 4-year high
Housing building approvals have surged to their highest level in nearly 4 years, up more than 20 per cent compared with this time last year.
ABS data shows 18,406 dwellings were approved in November 2025, a 20.2 per cent increase over the year, with strong growth driven by apartments and other higher‑density housing.
More crisis and transitional housing on the way with $100 million funded
The Albanese Labor Government has reached a major milestone with more than $100 million funded for new crisis, transitional and youth housing projects across Australia through the $1 billion Housing Australia Future Fund – Crisis & Transitional program.
