The Hon Michael Sukkar

Michael Sukkar was sworn in as the Assistant Minister to the Treasurer on 24 January 2017.

He was elected to the Australian House of Representatives at the 2013 federal election and is the ninth person to hold the seat of Deakin since its creation in 1937.

Michael has lived, worked and been a part of the Deakin electorate all of his life.

Michael grew up in Ringwood and attended primary school at Sacred Heart in Croydon and then secondary school at Aquinas College in Ringwood. After secondary school, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University in Burwood. He later furthered his studies by completing a Master of Laws at the University of Melbourne.

During university Michael was involved in a number of local community activities, including coaching junior teams at St. John’s Basketball Club in Mitcham.

Prior to entering the Parliament, Michael Sukkar spent seven years working as a lawyer with the firm, Ashurst Australia (then known as Blake Dawson Waldron) where he was a Senior Associate. In this role, he advised many of Australia's most successful individuals and largest corporate groups. Before this role, he worked as a Senior Consultant with accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers where he specialised in taxation.

Away from politics, Michael remains an avid basketball player and enjoys gardening.

Michael lives in Blackburn with his wife, Anna.
